Finding Your Way Back: Steps to Reignite Your Drive After Heartbreak or Grief

Grief has a way of halting everything. It doesn’t just take away a loved one or a moment; it takes your sense of self, your direction, and even your creativity. When I lost my mom, it felt like the world stopped spinning. My drive, my creativity, and the passion I once had for my business all disappeared. I realized that I was suffering from a broken heart.

I felt confused and stuck, like I’d hit a brick wall. I couldn’t understand why I had no motivation for something I once loved. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to pause my business. I even closed my studio, not because I wanted to but because I couldn’t find the love I once had for what I do.

But that pause—though painful—was necessary. It gave me the space to process, to heal, and to start piecing together a new way forward.

Grief comes in many forms. It’s not always the loss of a loved one; sometimes, it’s the loss of a relationship, a career, a vision for your future, or even your sense of self. Any of these losses can detach us from our brand, our goals, and the dreams we’ve worked so hard to build.

If you’ve felt this way, you’re not alone. And while the path back may look different for everyone, these are the steps that helped me move forward.

1️⃣ Pause with Purpose

When grief hits, it’s okay to pause. Give yourself permission to feel everything without guilt. Taking time to process your emotions isn’t a setback; it’s a step toward healing. Pausing doesn’t mean you’re giving up on your goals; it means you’re giving yourself the care you need to return stronger.

Pause with Purpose2️⃣ Reconnect with Your “Why”

Grief can make you question everything, including your purpose. Take time to reflect on what once brought you joy. Ask yourself:

  • Why did I start this journey?

  • Who am I trying to impact?

  • What parts of my work still resonate with me?

Reconnecting with your “why”even if it feels small can reignite a spark. For me, it was remembering how much I loved helping others tell their stories through photography.

3️⃣ Take One Tiny Step

When the big picture feels overwhelming, start small. Your first step doesn’t have to be perfect or groundbreaking. It could be as simple as journaling your feelings, revisiting an old hobby, or brainstorming ideas. Small steps build momentum, and momentum creates progress.

4️⃣ Simplify and Rebuild

Grief often forces us to reassess our priorities. It’s okay to pivot and let go of what no longer aligns with your heart. Focus on one meaningful thing at a time. For me, simplifying my goals and focusing on projects that felt fulfilling helped me rebuild my confidence and passion.

5️⃣ Surround Yourself with Support

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Reach out to people who inspire and uplift you. Talk to someone who understands your loss or seek professional help if needed. Building a supportive community can make all the difference when you feel stuck.

6️⃣ Celebrate the Little Wins

Every small step you take is worth celebrating. Whether it’s completing a task, having a moment of inspiration, or simply feeling a little lighter, acknowledge your progress. These wins are signs that you’re moving forward, even if it’s at your own pace.

What We Grieve Beyond Loved Ones

While the loss of a loved one is profound, grief can take many forms. You might be grieving:

  • A Dream or Goal: Maybe you’ve had to let go of a vision for your future.

  • Your Identity: Transitioning roles—like leaving a job or becoming a parent—can feel like losing a part of yourself.

  • A Relationship: Friendships, partnerships, or mentors can shape our lives. Losing them can leave a void.

  • Your Confidence: Failure or rejection can lead to a loss of belief in yourself.

Each of these losses can make you feel disconnected from your goals and brand. But the truth is, grief can also be transformative. It can teach you to adapt, to realign with your purpose, and to find a deeper connection to your work.

Finding Your Way Back to Your Brand and Goals

Rebuilding after grief isn’t about returning to who you were, it’s about discovering who you are now. It’s about giving yourself grace to grow through the pain and finding new ways to connect with your passions.

Grief will change you, but it doesn’t have to derail you. You can find your way back to yourself, your creativity, and your goals. I’m living proof.
